Associate Director for Geostationary Programmes

Darmstadt, Germany

EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 member states, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, land and ocean that deliver vital data 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our data contribute to weather forecasts that protect lives and property across Europe and to monitoring of our changing climate. EUMETSAT is now embarking on new and challenging satellite development programmes, shaping its long-term future.

In this leadership position, you will establish the new Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) system as the most capable meteorological geostationary satellite system worldwide and make it ready for operations in the 2020 timeframe. As the MTG system authority, you will manage all definition, preliminary design and development activities at mission, system and ground segment levels until handover to our operations department after launch and commissioning. This includes managing major procurements of ground segment subsystems, LEOP and launch services and cooperation with the European Space Agency for the development of the MTG satellites, and ensuring the availability of a highly skilled workforce. At the same time, you will support the continuous improvement of programme management processes in EUMETSAT - so your impact on our activities cannot be overstated.

To be equal to the challenge, you must be capable of delivering end-to-end systems that fully meet agreed requirements, overseeing system and lower level development activities, testing, validation and acceptance, and controlling quality and product assurance, risk management and substantial budgets. This demands a degree-level education and extensive experience of developing satellite systems, preferably for Earth observation. Naturally, you are fully able to plan and manage complex development projects against demanding schedules within a matrix organisation, skilled in leading large interdisciplinary teams and capable of motivating colleagues at every level. Experience of working with ESA would be advantageous, and finally, you must be fluent in English or French together with a working knowledge of the other language.

Attractive employment conditions are offered, in terms of salary, comprehensive benefits including health and social welfare provision, and extensive relocation assistance if applicable.
