The Department of Numerical Weather Prediction in the framework of the partial legal capacity of the Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik (ZAMG), 1190 Vienna, Hohe Warte 38, plans to strengthen its team and therefore is searching for a



Atmospheric scientist (f/m)



Requirements/Essential Skills:


University degree or equivalent in meteorology, physics or a related subject with a background in computational science

Good knowledge of scientific programming using a high-level programming language (Fortran and/or C/C++)

Experience in working with large data sets applying statistical methods

Ability to work/develop within a Linux/Unix environment

Good working knowledge of the English language (spoken and written), ability to participate in meetings

Ability to work as part of a team, high level of commitment, interest in continuing education/training

Unrestricted access to the Austrian labor market

Beneficial Skills:


Good working knowledge of the German language (spoken and written)

Experience in the acquisition, execution, and development of national and international research and cooperation projects

Job profile:


The new staff member will join the department of numerical weather prediction at ZAMG and work in one of the following areas:


Observation processing and data assimilation

Developing numerical weather models and related tools (from nowcasting to short range) including ensemble techniques

Data analysis applying various statistical methods

Cooperating with the national and international partners

Duty Station and place of employment: Austria, 1190 Vienna, Hohe Warte 38

Start of employment: April 1, 2015

Working time: 40 hours per week (full time)

Duration of employment: Limited in time for 1 year with option for extension




Depending on background and qualifications of the candidate, but at least € 2,311.70per month (gross) in the first 6 months, after 2,427.40 €
