The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1150 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the "System Earth" and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.

For Section 4.2 "Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry" we invite applications for

1 PostDoc on magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits (m/f)

Job Vacancy No. 17/42/15 G

The Section 4.2 "Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry" of the GFZ Potsdam searches for one postdoctoral researcher to join a new research group focusing on the quantification of magmatic-hydrothermal ore-forming processes. The project aims at developing multi-method approaches integrating numerical modeling, geochemical analysis and field work for exploration of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits. This group will be headed by Dr. Philipp Weis (ETH Zürich).

Your Tasks:

The research tasks focus on model development and numerical simulations of hydrothermal fluid flow and magma chamber dynamics. The numerical model uses the Complex Systems Modeling Platform (CSMP++) for multi-phase flow of saline high-temperature fluids through fractured and porous rock. The successful applicant will also be involved in the development and integration process of the research group's multi-method approach.

Your Qualifications:

Candidates should have an interest in ore formation, numerical process modeling, fluid dynamics, igneous petrology, volcanology, geomechanics and geochemistry. The ideal candidate has experience in both numerical modeling and geology, or alternatively a very strong expertise in one of the fields and a strong interest in the respective other one. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) and a PhD degree (or equivalent) either in a discipline of geosciences or computational sciences and have started to develop an individual research profile, documented by peer-reviewed publications.

Starting date: 01. April 2015 (earliest)

Fixed term: 3 years

Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week)

The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment

Salary: EG 13 TVöD-Bund (Ost)

You can expect a very diverse and challenging job in an international work environment that is characterized by exciting research projects. The compatibility of work and family life is of particular concern to the GFZ. Therefore, it offers the opportunity for flexible working time and workplaces. Moreover, there is a kindergarten located on the research campus.

The GFZ is a partner with Geo.X (www.geo-x.net), and as such it is well connected with other geoscience institutions in Potsdam and Berlin. Geo.X forms the largest regional cluster of geoscientific expertise in Europe and offers excellent opportunities for cooperation and development.

Equal opportunity is an inherent part of our personnel policy. Therefore we are particularly welcoming applications from qualified women. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential treatment in the case of equal qualification.

We will retain your application documents for at least three months, even if the application is not successful. They will not be returned.
